COUNTRY RANK #3

United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven Emirates. The UAE is a member of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC); other members include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait. Dubai is the regional leader of the seven Emirates in terms of retail, which has been one of the key success stories for the UAE in recent years. Shopping in climate-controlled malls is considered a favourite pastime, especially among local residents, although tourism has also provided a major boost to the sector. Overall, shopping centres constitute the main retail format, accounting for approximately 60% of retail stock. The main locations of successful shopping centres in the UAE are in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. UAE shopping centres appear to have adopted the format of anchoring centres with large hypermarket stores. This is a unique format for the UAE and other parts of the Middle East. Although Dubai is widely considered to be the shopping capital of the Middle East, Abu Dhabi is slowly improving its offering. In the past five years, retail space in Dubai has increased four-fold due to the entrance of several shopping centres of behemoth proportions. Typically the newest malls to have entered the market have also been "destination" or "themed" malls and examples include Dubai Mall, Mall of Emirates, Mirdiff City Centre, and Ibn Battuta Mall. In the UAE, it is not possible for a non-resident to own more than 49% of any business. As a result, all foreign retail businesses operate by way of franchise or joint ventures. Prominent names in the region include M.H.Al Shaya Company, Al Futtaim Group, Bin Hendi Enterprises, Chaloub Group, and Liwa Trading.

Our Top Tip For
New Arrivals

Do wear a hat, sunscreen, and drink plenty of water; don't walk on the sunny side of the street. Take a jacket, as it can get surprisingly cool in the air conditioning.
