UtrechtNetherlands

city rank #131

City Overview

The centrally located city of Utrecht is one of the most popular shopping cities in the Netherlands. The city has a total retail floor space of over 500,000 sq m and over 4,000 outlets. The main shopping area covers roughly 140,000 sq m and also includes shopping centre Hoog Catharijne (approx. 61,000 sq m) and the historic centre. SC Hoog Catharijne is located adjacent to Central Station. The redevelopment of SC Hoog Catharijne, which dates from 1973, is currently in full swing and the floor area will be expanded with about 35,000 sq m. Hudson´s Bay will open a new store in the former (redeveloped) V&D retail unit. The first section of the redevelopment of Hoog Catharijne has been delivered only recently, the completion of the entire project is planned for 2018. The main shopping area of Utrecht includes Lange Elisabethstraat, Oudegracht, Steenweg and Vredenburg. Retailers such as The Sting, Zara, C&A and Pull & Bear are located here. The city centre has a lively atmosphere thanks to its historic character and many catering facilities. Since the high streets constitute a circle, there is also an ideal routing. Shops in the high segment are housed around Oudkerkhof. The short shopping street Voor Clarenburg connects the inner city shopping circuit with Hoog Catharijne. Large district centres are located at Kanaleneiland (around 19,000 sq m) and Overvecht (about 27,000 sq m). Along the A12 motorway is situated home furnishing strip Woonboulevard Utrecht. This location offers almost 70 shops and Swedish retailer IKEA is the anchor store. SC Terwijde has been completed still recently (12,000 sq m). Apart from shopping centre Hoog Catharijne, the construction of the new shopping centre Leidsche Rijn Centrum (28,000 sq m) in district Leidsche Rijn (near the A2 motorway) is an important project as well. Its completion is scheduled for 2017.
