Retail By City

city rank #28

City Overview

Toronto is one of Canada's dominant retail markets. Retail sales in the city have continued to increase with strong consumer confidence, immigration and a robust job market. The city continues to draw foreign retailers due to its high residential densities, similar to upscale New York, Chicago or San Francisco.

There are many unique ethnic shopping areas throughout the city. Several suburban centres such as Yorkdale Mall, Sherway Gardens, Square One and Scarborough Towne Centre compete with the downtown core - most of which have recently completed extensive renovation and expansion projects. The city also includes several outlet options, chiefly Vaughan Mills located north of the city.

The Bloor Street/Yorkville hub attracts international and high-end retailers. The CF Toronto Eaton Centre/Yonge and Dundas area has become a vibrant shopping destination with a "Times Square" dynamic. In the downtown core, office buildings are connected by a series of shopping corridors called the PATH. This is the world's largest underground shopping complex with 27 km (16 miles) of shopping arcades and 4.0 million sq. ft. of retail space. The continued rejuvenation of the downtown core is putting upward pressures on rents. The intensification of both office and condominium construction in Downtown South is also attracting retailers to an area hitherto relatively empty of retailers. This submarket will continue being an attractive niche for retailers as more office tenants and residential residents flock to this submarket.
