Retail By City

city rank #131

City Overview

Tallinn and it's surrounding county (Harjumaa) are home to 560 000 people, which is 43% of Estonias total population. Due to higher average income and a concentration of big business, the capital region accounts for approx. 60% of national GDP. Tallinn CBD is quite compact. High street retail locations are largely concentrated in the Old Town, in the area between Pärnu highway, City Hall square (Raekoja plats) and Freedom square (Vabaduse Väljak). High street retail, is less developed vis-a-vis shopping centres than in most EU countries. The main street retail areas are Viru street, then ends of Väike-Karja and Suur-Karja streets, with some adjoining streets. High street shops are mainly visited by tourists and affluent Estonians. The vast majority of locals prefer shopping centres or department stores. The largest and most visited CBD shopping centre is Viru Keskus along with connected Kaubamaja department store. Overall, the largest shopping centres are located outside the city centre. The largest of these is Rocca al Mare Keskus in West-Tallinn.
