Retail By City

city rank #67

City Overview

Built around one of the world's most spectacular harbours, Sydney is a vibrant, world- class city, teeming with fantastic beaches and parklands. As Australia's economic and financial hub, this cosmopolitan city is an established retail destination for its 5 million residents. Sydney has undergone a major revitalisation in recent years with the choice and calibre of retail destinations improving alongside the refurbishment of central business district (CBD) office buildings. Catering to the various retail needs of its working population, day visitors, and international tourists, the Sydney CBD is a clear hot spot for retail, from mid- to high-fashion retailers, department stores and international brands.

Pitt Street Mall is the pedestrianised section of Pitt Street and continues to be Sydney’s dominant retail strip despite being only one block long. George Street is undergoing a transformation with the street being pedestrianised and a light rail being installed. Upon completion, George St will become a major shopping strip and offer retailers a credible alternative to Pitt St Mall.

The dominant shopping centres are Westfield Sydney, Bondi Junction, Macquarie Centre, Chatswood Chase, Westfield Chatswood and Westfield Parramatta to the west.
