city rank #89

City Overview

Stuttgart is the capital of the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and the centre of the like-named metropolitan region with approx. 5.3 million inhabitants. The economy of both the city and the region is widely known for its automotive industry, with leading companies such as Daimler AG, Porsche and Bosch present. Due to its administrative function, Stuttgart hosts all federal state ministries and delegated agencies. In terms of urban planinng, the overarching project 'stuttgart 21' releases a number of construction measures. One of them is the new multifunctional quarter "Rosenstein" around Milaneo shopping centre north to the central railway station which is going to be moved underground in order to enhance long-distance traffic.

Stuttgart’s retail market benefits of high incomes. Mass market segments are concentrated on the major high street Königstrasse, which is home to all major retailers. Nevertheless, there is notable retail spread around both westwards in e.g. Calwer Straße (upper market) and the area around the Marktplatz with e.g. the dominant Breuninger department store ad headquarters.
