city rank #3

City Overview

Underpinned by strong economic growth, with a permanent population close to 24 million and amongst the highest disposable income levels in China, Shanghai represents the one of the biggest retail market in the country. Supporting Shanghai's retail, is its impressive infrastructure network. Shanghai has the world’s longest subway system, the most extensive network of urban bus routes, the world’s busiest container port, and the fastest bullet train. Major prime retail sub-markets include Nanjing Road West, Huaihai Central Road, Lujiazui CBD, for the mid- to high- income demographic groups. Xujiahui, Nanjing Road East, Hongqiao, and New Shanghai Commercial City serve the mid-market while there are also some emerging markets such as Wujiaochang, Putuo, Zhabei, Minhang and Baoshan. Overall, Shanghai’s retail market is extremely active spurred by continuous supply of new shopping malls, appearance of creative trade categories, stable expansion of fast fashion retailers, demand for flagship stores and increasing emergence of new retail brands both from domestic and abroad.
