City Overview

The major retail districts in Seoul are mostly clustered around the central business district (CBD). Myeongdong, Seoul's leading retail hub, is immediately adjacent to the CBD and contains a number of high-end department stores and street shops with local and international mid-market brands. Insadong and Samcheongdong both cater to shoppers of traditional Korean clothing, art, and antiques. Namdaemun, also within walking distance of the CBD, accommodates a large number of lower-end owner/operator stores. Dongdaemun targets local residents and younger shoppers hunting for affordable and fashionable local brands. Shinchon, home to several universities such as Yonsei University and Hongik University, is a very vibrant area with an active student nightlife and also targets younger consumers looking for bargains. Itaewon and Hannam-dong are expat clusters with various night entertainments and accessible luxury shops. South of the Han River in Gangnam area, flagship stores for luxury brands are mainly located in Cheongdamdong, and Garosu-gil is quickly becoming the hotspot for global SPA brands to open their new stores. Koreans have also begun to demand more entertainment options as part of the shopping experience, resulting in large western-style shopping malls with shopping, dining, and recreational facilities such as cinemas. Time Square in Yongdeungpo, IFC mall in Yeouido, and Starfield COEX Mall in GBD are good examples.
