Retail By City

city rank #102

City Overview

Rotterdam is the second shopping city by retail stock in the Netherlands. The city centre is modern and therefore differs from the historic centres of most other Dutch cities. The main high streets of Rotterdam have been developed systematically. With the completion of projects such as Markthal near Blaak (food shops, residential apartments and parking in an architectural high-pitched construction) and the extension of Beurstraverse Rotterdam has reinforced its city centre further. High streets in the centre are Lijnbaan, Korte Lijnbaan, Beurstraverse (also known as ´Koopgoot´) and Hoogstraat. Important tenants here are the Dutch department stores De Bijenkorf, Hema, H&M, Zara, Hollister and The Sting. Hudson's Bay will open its doors in 2017. The high-end and more specialist retailers are located at Karel Doormanstraat, Kruiskade and Meent. Alexandrium Shopping Centre, Alexandrium II and III (145,000 sq m), in the northeast of the city, is one of the most successful shopping concentrations in the Netherlands. Alexandrium Shopping Centre ('Alexandrium I') is the oldest part. The first Dutch store of Primark was opened here. Alexandrium II (built in the mid-90s) is a stretched promenade with big shops. Alexandrium III ('Alexandrium Woonmall') is a large home furnishing strip. Shopping centre Zuidplein (almost 55,000 sq m), in the south of the city, is one of the largest covered traditional shopping centres in the Netherlands. Primark has a store here. A prominent scheme outside the city centre is Big Shops Park Boulevard (around 25,000 sq m).
