Retail By City

Rio de JaneiroBrazil

city rank #164

City Overview

High street retail in Rio de Janeiro is concentrated primarily along Rua Garcia Davila. This district is popular with both international and Brazilian tourists. A site in Rio de Janeiro for luxury brands is the Village Mall, in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood. The establishment and growth of shopping centers in Rio de Janeiro came later than seen in many other large cities. Rio Sul Shopping Center, completed in 1980, was the first project with all the characteristics of a monumental shopping mall to be built in the city. This was followed by Barra Shopping in 1981, Iguatemi in São Paulo in 1966 and the Conjunto Nacional in Brasília, in 1971. Prime retail shopping centers are mainly located in wealthier areas of the city, such as the South Zone and Barra da Tijuca  in Rio.
