city rank #15

City Overview

Umeda is recognised as the commercial centre of Osaka. Serviced by Japan Railway and several private railway lines, Umeda is a significant transportation hub, attracting commuters and shoppers alike from Kyoto, Kobe, and Greater Osaka with its easy access. It features a concentration of large commercial buildings, boutiques, and underground shopping arcades. Competition amongst large department stores in the area is fierce but brings in substantial amount of consumer footfall, with Hankyu, hanshin and Daimaru, all having marked their presence in the area for decades. Chayamachi in Umeda is also a hot shopping destination, with numerous casual brand shops lining its network of streets. Most luxury brands are found occupying premises in either department stores or commercial buildings. The JR Osaka station redevelopment is attracting attention from many retailers and consumers, with the completion of Lucua in early 2011 adding competition to the area. The Grand Front Osaka, one of the largest development projects in this area, was completed in April 2013 with 100% retail occupancy.

The current leading luxury retail district is Shinsaibashi to the south of Umeda, with luxury brands traditionally occupying either side of Midosuji-dori and casual brands lining Shinsaibashi-suji. Sees noticeable increase in foreign tourists over the past few years. Many drug stores have opened on Shinsaibashi-suji recently. Shinsaibashi is also home ground for Daimaru, where it houses its head department store, and directly connected to the Shinsaibashi subway station. Dimaru main store is under construction and will be open in 2019. Many luxury auto retailers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren, have recently opened showrooms along the Midosuji-dori.
