city rank #86

City Overview

Mumbai has traditionally been a hub of trade and finance. Over the years, it has established itself as the financial capital of India and is now considered among the world's leading financial centers. A changing demographic profile, flourishing services sector and increase in disposable incomes have positioned Mumbai as a key retail market in the country. The city now offers a spectrum of retail formats (from value to the lifestyle segment), with leading domestic and foreign retailers operating multiple outlets across the city. Moreover, owing to the substantial presence of upper middle class and High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs), the city has also emerged as one of the leading hubs of luxury retail in the country.

Traditionally, retail activity in the city was characterized by the presence of large standalone stores such as Benzer in high-street locations such as Colaba Causeway and Kemps Corner in South Mumbai and Linking Road in the Western Suburbs. All these high streets are located in proximity to prominent residential clusters in the city. However, to meet the growing demand for good quality space and to accommodate heightened interest from global retailers, organized developments mushroomed across the city. This led to the development of the first shopping center in the country in 1999 – Crossroads. The spurt in mall development activity enabled prominent retail brands to shift their focus from high streets and five-star hotels to organized retail real estate.

As a result, several domestic and international retailers have set up stores in the city in the past few years. Forever 21, Furla, Guess, Timberland, Versace, Burberry, Marks & Spencer, Zara, Hamleys, Mango, Tag Heuer, Diesel, Hermes, Forever New and Omega are some of the few global brands that operate stores in several malls as well as high streets.
