Retail By City

MontrealCanada

city rank #90

City Overview

The downtown core dominates the retail market in Montreal. Street front opportunities along Sainte-Catherine Street West and de la Monrtagne Street remain the most sought-after locations; units do not remain vacant for long. Like Toronto, Montreal has an underground shopping area connecting the various office towers and public transit system. The suburban malls contain all of the traditional retailers but also big boxes that can't be found in Downtown Montreal. The suburban market is increasingly being serviced by power centres and outlet malls, in addition to existing neighbourhood malls that are anchored by grocery or pharmaceutical retailers.

Several important power centre projects have been developed recently on and around the Island of Montreal. Lifestyle centres are a new concept coming to Québec from the United States. This new type of shopping development combines retail outlets, office space, entertainment uses (spa, movie theatre, gym) and restaurants in an open and landscaped environment. Dix/30 on the South Shore is the largest example of this format in Greater Montreal along with Solar Uniquartier which is currently under construction nearby.
