City Overview

Mannheim, with almost 310,000 inhabitants virtually on the same level as the southern Karlsruhe, is the capital of the Rhein-Neckar Metropolitan Region with its population of 2.4 million. Together with its neighbouring city Ludwigshafen on the other side of the river Rhein, Mannheim is also a leading location for the chemicals industry. Mannheim is famous for its university, which places a particular emphasis on economics.

Planned in the 17th century according to absolutistic ideas, building blocks of the square city are named in a combination of numbers and letters for the columns and rows. Major retail locations are Planken (between blocks O and P), Kunststrasse (between N and O), Fressgass (between P and Q) and Kurpfalzstrasse, located in right angle to them. Block Q features Q6/Q7 shopping center which opened 2016.
