city rank #176

City Overview

Peru's retail market is still evolving in terms of both the economy and infrastructure. Initially, retail development in Lima focused only on downtown locations. However, as the population grew and began settling in different parts of the city, existing buildings were converted to retail and new retail development started. San Isidro and Miraflores became the prime retailing areas and by the 1980's the first shopping centres were built. In the late 1990's, Jockey Plaza Shopping Centre opened. This was the first modern, enclosed shopping facility with anchor stores and parking in the Peruvian market. There are some avenues in San Isidro where notable international retailers, including Ermenegildo Zegna and Roberto Giordano, have opened stores. Otherwise, high street retailing in Lima remains fragmented. Gradual improvement and growth in the retail economy is anticipated in coming years.
