City Overview

Leipzig is the largest city in the federal state of Saxony and, together with Dresden, forms the Mitteldeutschland Metropolitan Region with a population of 2.4 million. The economy of the city of Leipzig is based on transport and logistics, with Leipzig Airport as the major air-cargo hub in eastern Germany. The central station in Leipzig is the largest terminal station in Europe and also offers a wide variety of shops. Leipzig hosts the annual bookstore trade fair Leipziger Buchmesse, one of the most important trade fairs in this field.

The major high streets are Peterstrasse and Grimmaische Strasse, which have a broad retail offer. Grimmaische Strasse also hosts the main campus of Leipzig University, teaching more than 28,000 students currently. Further important retail streets are Nicolaistrasse, Markt and Hainstrasse. The latter benefits from footfall between the shopping center Höfe am Brühl and Grimmaische / Peterstrasse and shows a steady uptrading tendence. One unusual feature of Leipzig’s retail market is that its high streets are connected by several shopping arcades. However, there is no traditional luxury area. Nova Eventis and Paunsdorf Center are important shopping centers for the market, but are located out-of-town.
