Retail By City

Ho Chi Minh CityVietnam

city rank #93

City Overview

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam's economic and financial hub. The metro area has more than eight million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in Vietnam. The CBD, the area bounded by Ton Duc Thang, Ham Nghi, Cach Mang Thang Tam and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai streets, is the retail hotspot in Ho Chi Minh City owing to the area catchment population, potential for growth and convenient accessibility, i.e., public transport nodes. Many commercial buildings are in the CBD, providing a stable customer source for its retail centers.

During recent years, due to a lack of available land bank in the CBD area, non-CBD areas have become hotspots for new retail supply. Thanks to improving infrastructure and connectivity as well as the new residential areas, modern retail is now to be seen in all areas of the city. We expect to see this trend continuing for many years.

Apart from the CBD, there is another main retail cluster in Ho Chi Minh City: The South of Saigon. This area is renowned for Phu My Hung New Urban Area (NUA) which is becoming an alternative city center for Ho Chi Minh City with two large-scale shopping centers, Crescent Mall and SC Vivo City, both developed in cooperation with foreign developers and with many shophouses leased for international F&B brands. Shophouses in Phu My Hung were all developed by the Phu My Hung Group and are well known for their quality as well as their good architectural design. The area is very busy with F&B, accommodation and beauty services, and attracts youngsters and foreign residents, mostly Japanese and Koreans.

In recent years, Metro Line No. 1, one of the crucial infrastructure projects being undertaken by the city, has provided opportunities for many new residential projects to emerge along the line or close to it. With the prospect of a new, populous urbanized area, the retail market in the East of Ho Chi Minh City is expected to witness major changes in a few years.
