Retail By City

city rank #76

City Overview

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and, in the UK’s retail hierarchy, it sits second only to London’s West End. The retail sector in Glasgow generates over £3.3 billion per annum and supports 17,000 full time jobs. The city’s retail core is focussed on Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street, Ingram Street and Argyle Street. The core is further enhanced by two covered shopping centres, Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Shopping Centre, located at the northern and southern ends of Buchanan Street.

Prime Buchanan Street continues to be Glasgow’s jewel in the crown, with new lettings including Victoria’s Secret, Nespresso and T2 taking their first units in the city. Levi’s have relocated from Buchanan Galleries to the prime pitch of Buchanan Street in a letting which set a new rental tone for the street. Rents have continued to rise throughout 2018 and demand for space on Buchanan Street remains robust. On Argyle Street and Sauchiehall Street rents have levelled out, with rents considerably down form their previous peaks. Availability is also high at the extremities of each street due to a lack of demand. In 2018, Sauchiehall Street was affected by two large fires which has had a negative impact on footfall with part of the street being blocked off.

Things to do

Buchanan Street for the brand conscious customer; Princes Square to experience this small shopping development; Ingram Street for that added bit of luxury with retailers such as Armani, Ralph Lauren and Replay.

Museum of Modern Art is a must to keep up to date with the latest in the art scene; Royal Exchange Square; Loch Lomond for serenity; and for that final fling of brilliance, head for the historic Glasgow University.

And be seen

Rogano for oysters; Gamba for a wide range of fish dishes; 29 where non-members can dine in splendour in this exclusive members club; Chaophraya for a taste of Thailand. The Ivy have acquired a unit which will be an exciting addition to Buchanan Street.

The Horseshoe Bar, the longest bar in Europe; Princes Square at the heart of the action; Café Gondolfi, a Glasgow institution. The newly opened Citizen bar and restaurant located on St Vincent Place always has a buzz.

Be Merry

The grand Corinthian bar, nightclub, and casino. Head to the numerous bars at Royal Exchange Square for late night cocktails and dancing.
