City Overview

Durban is situated in the KwaZulu-Natal Province and falls under the eThekwini Municipality. KwaZulu-Natal covers an area of 94,361km², about the size of Portugal, and has a population of 11.3 million (2018 mid-year estimate). Also known as the “Garden Province”, its landscape includes flourishing green valleys and a subtropical coastline, which is one of the reasons why it is one of South Africa’s most popular tourist destinations.

The capital city of the province is Pietermaritzburg but Durban is of vital importance with the Durban port being one of the busiest in South Africa. The principal languages within the province are is Zulu, followed by English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans. The region has a rich cultural diversity that springs from the influences of British colonialism mixed with Zulu, Indian and Afrikaans traditions, among others. Furthermore, real annual economic growth rates for 2016 indicate a growth of 0.7% for the KwaZulu-Natal province.

The eThekwini Municipal area covers a land size of 2,297km² and is home to a total population of 3.4 million people according to 2011 census data. Of this population roughly 70% are of working age (15 - 64 years old). Additionally, 956,713 households make up the municipal area with the majority (17.1%) having no income, followed by 16.9% having an average household income of between R19,601 - R38,200.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal Province has approximately 3,481,298m² of formal shopping centres, of which the biggest is Gateway Theatre of Shopping (174,788m²), followed by The Pavilion (119,000m²) and Galleria Shopping Centre (88,346m²). As at Q2 2018, the retail market’s performance remains under pressure with little growth being recorded in turnover figures for centres. This is set to continue with rising fuel and living costs effecting consumers disposable income.
