Retail By City

city rank #55

City Overview

With almost 1.1 million inhabitants, Cologne is the largest city of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. With several broadcasting enterprises, huge sites for TV production in the suburbs and a manifold media scene, Cologne scores with some creative elements in the local economy. Furthermore important is the insurance business and the chemical industry with sites along the river Rhine northwards (Leverkusen, Dormagen) as well as southwards (Wesseling). Most prominent – and this is to be taken literally – is Cologne’s gothic cathedral, Germany’s most visited cultural site.

Only a stone’s throw away is the inner city retail area with Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse as prime locations. However, they serve as footfall engines for a veritable circle of complementing retail locations adding up further variety ontop: e.g. upmarket Mittelstrasse, more creative Ehrenstrasse or even bustling Friesenstrasse with its vital nightlife scene.
