Retail By City

city rank #46

City Overview

Chicago remains vibrant, particularly with its continuing move toward becoming a true 24-hour city. In trying to stabilize economic growth, while also remaining an attractive backdrop for retailers, Chicago continues to fuel demand for retail space throughout its real estate market. The city is a desirable location for international and national alike.  The Chicago Metro market has 29 regional shopping malls, encompassing more than 30 million sq. ft., and a further 35 sub-regional markets, each with more than one million sq. ft. of gross leasable area (GLA). The top five submarkets in the Metro area include Michigan Avenue, Schaumburg, Oak Brook, Old Orchard and Aurora/Naperville. Each of these top markets is anchored by at least one high-performing regional mall. Michigan Avenue and Schaumburg (Woodfield Mall) are the two biggest tourist draws for retail; Woodfield Mall draws more than 26 million visitors annually and The Magnificent Mile offers over 3.1 million square feet of retail space and attracts over 22 million visitors a year.
