Retail By City

City Overview

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and therefore benefits from attracting a huge catchment across Wales. Retailers considering space in Wales will choose Cardiff as their flagship store in the country.  The city’s retail market was historically focused around the prime shopping street, Queen Street which has links into St David’s Centre and the Queens Arcade. The St David’s Centre had a 750,000 sqft of retail extension in October 2009 and is anchored by the first John Lewis store for Wales totalling 250,000 sq ft.  SD2 has now become the primary fashion destination for Cardiff along with its street facing units along “The Hayes”. The scheme has attracted a number of new entrants to Cardiff including Hollister, Kiehls, Victoria’s Secret, Apple and Hamley’s amongst others. Queen Street has subsequently become more discount led and suffers from vacancies caused by oversupply in the Cardiff retail market. The House of Fraser store in the centre of Cardiff is one of the biggest department stores in Wales, extending to 270,000 sq ft of retail space and occupying a prime 1.7-acre site. There are currently plans in place to redevelop the property to include a hotel, ground floor retail and residential on the upper parts. The Capitol Centre is now seen as a secondary retail scheme and New River have plans to redevelop into a new scheme with a leisure focus.
