Retail By City

city rank #55

City Overview

As the capital city, with over 2 million inhabitants (taking into account the entire metropolitan area this rises to over 2.5 million), the highest purchasing power in Romania, and a record low unemployment rate for the country (approx. 2%), Bucharest has become a magnet for international retailers in recent years (with names like H&M, Leroy Merlin, Auchan, Subway, Montblanc, Escada or Valentino). Several new entries have been recorded in Bucharest during the past 12 months: Liu Jo, New Balance, Bobbi Brown, Marc Cain, Michael Kors, Tally Weijl, Marks&Spencer food, Hilfiger Denim, Kiehl’s, Tous, Pupa Milano or Mango Man. In 2015 only two schemes were opened: Pipera Plaza a 10,000 sq m operational at the outskirts of Bucharest and Mega Mall a 75,000 sq m GLA shopping mall located in the Eastern part of the city. Also during 2016 Veranda Shop&Stay and ParkLake are set to be operational both of them located within the populated Eastern districts. The high street in Bucharest is not  potential. Victoriei Avenue has more chances to attract luxury and up-market stores, both mono- and multi-brand mainly due to the infrastructure works completed in the recent past. The Lipscani area, which is the historical city centre, has transformed itself into the go-to destination for restaurants and bars, as well as convenience stores, while the fashion retailers have just started to look towards this particular area.
