City Overview

Abuja’s retail market has showed potential in past although the recession of 2015/2016 caused a slowdown in activity in the area. One of the first formal malls in Nigeria was the 10,000m² Ceddi Plaza which opened its doors to customers in 2005. Since the mall has been in operation, the retail market has grown tremendously both in Abuja and across the country as a whole. In total, there are six malls in Abuja including Ceddi Plaza, Silverbird in the CBD, Grand Towers Mall in Apo, Jabi Lake mall in Jabi, Gateway mall in Lugbe and Central Office Park (Wuse mall) in Wuse. The total combined retail space in Abuja is roughly 83,000m².

Malls across Nigeria are gradually morphing into more structured ones with international standards and best practices being applied to the newer malls that are currently being developed. One of the changes is that pre-letting space is now widely practiced even though this was not the case 5 - 10 years ago when two of the existing malls in Abuja were being developed.
